Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is only a quarter mile from The Sportsman’s Lodge and was established in 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. The refuge comprises 7,350 acres along the eastern edge of the Missouri River floodplain south of Mound City, Missouri in Holt County. The most dramatic moments at the refuge occur during the spring and fall migrations when hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese (particularly snow geese) on the Central Flyway pass through the refuge. As many as 475 bald eagles have been sighted on the refuge in the winter. The refuge annually celebrates the eagle visits with “Eagle Days” celebrations. A 0.25-mile trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps climbs 200 feet vertically to a refuge overlook from which you can see Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska.
Big Lake State Park on Big Lake is located just minutes away from the Sportsman’s Lodge. Big Lake State Park was one of the first public recreation areas in northwest Missouri and is a 407-acre park everyone can enjoy. The lake is the state’s largest oxbow lake, formed after a change of course of the nearby Missouri River.
There are several picnic areas, a swimming pool, boat launch, fishing, bird watching and dining in the park’s restaurant.
